Whatser is a social app that allows users to save and share their favorite locations within their neighborhood. The user can add any kind of location, from restaurants to retail stores or local attractions. This information is made available to the user’s Whatser friends. Users can see where their friends have been and what places they like to use as suggestions when deciding where to go. The user can also receive notifications and offers from the locations listed on Whatser. The app is available for Android, iPhone and Blackberry devices. Users can choose from a pre-set list of cities, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Copenhagen, Stockholm, New York, San Francisco and Sydney or enter their own city. Business owners can also submit their shop or location to Whatser to be included in the application’s listings. Each location hotspot list shows the user how many others are following that item, how many tags have been applied to it, how many photos of it exist on Whatser and how many thanks it received from users.
Whatser was founded in 2008. The application, which is based in Amsterdam, was designed to create a context aware infrastructure. Significant funding was received in June of 2010 and the Whatser community has continued to grow. The company currently employs fewer than 20 individuals and provides a fun, entertaining way for users to decide where to go in their local area.
Whatser provides users with unbiased insight into the best spots in their city. The application provides further detail through its tagging system and images of the locations listed on it. Whatser also employs social networking features by allowing users to see and share each other’s locations.
Whatser has a modern feel with a stylish website design. The green logo features a wavy, stylized ‘W’. The website background features a cityscape image which compliments the short introduction video presented on the homepage. Location pages include an overview of the item, its name and an embedded Google map to show where it is geographically located. The user can also review all the tags applied to that item just below the map, along the right hand side. Each location page also includes an activity feed so users can see when it was added to a collection.
To get started, new users can click either the blue and white “Sign Up with Facebook” button or the bright green “Sign Up Now” button, both of which are found in the upper, right hand corner of the website. Users who choose the green button are taken to a page that asks for an email address and password. After completing the form, the user is invited to send friend requests to those on their Facebook, Gmail or Yahoo mail contact lists. The site also suggests friends to help the user get started.
Whatser is a free service that is available to anyone who is willing to create an account. This is a good way to encourage more users to sign up and participate. Although Whatser has a lot to offer an active user, it does not really provide a service that would warrant a subscription fee or other charge.
Whatser is a great application for anyone with a Blackberry, Android or iPhone device who would like to discover their city. Those who enjoy social networking can really get into the way the Whatser system works.
